Introduction

The new CPLD/FPGA Trainer from Flite Electronics incorporates everything needed to learn about advanced programmable logic devices such as Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLD) and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA). The only extra required is a PC to which the trainer connects. Designs are created on the PC using Altera's powerful MAX+PLUS II Baseline design software, and then downloaded to the trainer for experimentation.

The superb manual provided with the CPLD/FPGA Trainer takes the novice user through a digital logic refresher, an introduction to programmable logic devices, a tour of the MAX+PLUS II design software, and a series of combinational and sequential logic designs. If that is not enough, more advanced users will benefit from further experiments that go as far as to interface a microcontroller, A/D and D/A to the programmable logic device.

The design parameters of the CPLD/FPGA Trainer were that it should:

• Run on IBM compatible personal computers - with no need for ANY other hardware.
• Provide a complete training course, from initial logic design, to PC-based simulation, device programming and testing.

To the instructor, one of the main advantages of the CPLD/FPGA Trainer is its completeness. The board consists of:

• The CPLD/FPGA Trainer main unit - a sturdy metal-cased PCB containing both a device programmer and applications section. The PCB is also covered by a perspex lid, designed to allow access to input switches.
